“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford”

1939 vs 2008

'I won't defend the Cukor film as one of his best, because Luce's play doesn't like the idea of feminism much either. But at least, in his hands, it zipped along with wit and an ace cast, and didn't sit there stinking up the screen.' (Tim Robey)

in the new version, 'Meg Ryan stars as Mary Haines, whose husband is having an affair with a spritzer girl from the perfume counter of Saks (Eva Mendes, struggling in the Joan Crawford role). Annette Bening handles the Rosalind Russell part well enough, but only Candice Bergen, as Mary's mother, has anything witty to say: 'Don't be bitter, it leads to Botox.' (Jason Solomons)

Candice Bergen is still acting? How nice. I'll never forget that film where she gave Eliot Gould the finger, making a long sucking noise with her lips. Wonderful stuff!
